Question: How do you feel about every student having a MacBook for school?

Answer: Each student having their own MacBook has been wonderful!  It has eliminated the need to go to a computer lab for things like typing lab reports and doing research and has increased student access to a whole wealth of online resources such as video clips, and simulations.  It has allowed students to increase their knowledge of a particular topic in multiple ways.  Also, Canvas has been a great way for teachers to organize content and make resources available to students.

Q: Do you feel it helps students learn better?

A: Yes, it has helped students learn better for the reasons stated above.

Q: What is different about how classes are?

A: It is easier to have students perform research or complete a simulation at their desks for a short period of time to enhance their understanding of a topic and then switch to another activity.  We used to check out a computer lab for the whole hour and try and use the computers for the entire time.  Convenience is a big key with one on one MacBooks.  Everything is at the students’ fingertips.

Q: Do you see any change in socializing?

A: There has been a change in how students socialize over the past few years which I believe has more to do with dependence on cell phones and not necessarily related to MacBooks.  I see that there is less talking in classes as a way of socializing and more socializing via texting, SnapChat, etc.

Q: Is it a good or bad thing?(Related to question above)

A:  I believe that is neither a good nor bad thing, it is just a different way of socializing. My concern would be if students are only socializing via a phone and having little person to person socializing then they are not developing those skills.  It is all about balance.   In my classes, students have ample opportunities to work on person to person communication skills by working in groups, working on labs together and giving presentations.

Q: What would you like to see happen in the future?

A: Balance between use of technology and person to person communication such as working in groups to problem solve, etc.

Q: How do you use the MacBooks in classes?

A: Answered in question 1

Q: What would make using this technology easier?

A: We have had multiple excellent staff trainings on all of the ways we can be using technology in the classroom and I feel like there is more than enough support for this.

Q: How important is air play? How well do you know how to use it?

A: All I know about AirPlay is that I can connect to the projector using it.  I am not sure of other capabilities.  I had some difficulty with the Wifi when using AirPlay so it was kind of funky for me with cutting out etc.

Q:Any other comments about 1:1?

A: 1:1 has been great due to the convenience.  My hope is that we continue to use the technology effectively to enhance learning and balancing it with other teaching strategies such as hands on lab activities, cooperative group work, etc.
